It’s been a few years since I’ve checked in with The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies so I thought it would be a good time to look in on Hollywood and see if there’s been any substantial improvement in women’s representations on the big screen. In this updated video, I go through the 2011 films nominated for Best Picture at the 84th annual Academy Awards and see how they measure up to the Bechdel Test. Keep watching because I also propose a small addendum to help clarify the spirit of the test and provide a solution on how Hollywood can fix the glaring problem that the Bechdel Test exposes. I’ll also address the question, “What about the reverse test?” and I’ll show an alternative test that has been adapted by critics to identify the presence of people of colour in films. Sprinkled throughout this video I offer a few movie recommendations.

This year Madonna hosted her annual Oscarʼs Party and Hollywoodʼs A-list flocked to the soiree. Everyone except Cameron Diaz. But it wasnʼt Madonna choice to ban her, rather a jealous Demi Moore.
Last year Demi Moore co-hosted the lavish event with Madonna, and although this year she did not, she was still quote: “very instrumental in writing the guest list.”
It seems that Demi is upset that her ex, Ashton Kutcher was flirting with Cameron at a Golden Globes party in January. Ashton and Cameron had also co-starred in the 2008 comedy, What Happens in Vegas. Even though Demi and Cameron have worked together before too, she told Madonna “there is no way in heck you should let her in!”
Security was told to block her entrance, no matter what the circumstances were.
Cameron Diaz also had a long-term relationship with Madonna’s ex, Alex Rodriguez, so maybe the material girl is a bit jealous too?

“The Artist” was the big winner at the 84th annual Academy Awards, taking home Oscars for best picture, best director and its star Jean Dujardin…
In the best actress race, considered by many to be the biggest tossup of the night, Meryl Streep won over Viola Davis for her portrayal of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.”
“When they called my mind I had this feeling that I could hear half of America going ‘Oh, no. Why her, again?’ But, whatever,” said Streep after winning her third Oscar, though she’s been nominated 17 times — the most of any actor.

In an emotional speech, Streep thanked her husband for “everything I value most in my life” and her makeup artist Roy Helland, who has been with her since the start of her career and won his first Oscar Sunday night for “The Iron Lady.”
Bringing tears to the eyes of many in the audience, Streep said she values most the friendship of the people sitting before her. “I look out here and I see my life before my eyes — my old friends and my new friends.”
Dujardin also thanked the new friends he’s made in America since “The Artist.”
“I love your country,” Dujardin said, accepting his trophy and doing a little soft shoe as he exited the stage.
