Where the oscars a bit of a let down?

Where were the surprise winners? The fashion disasters? The mad speeches? The classic zingers? The answer – to everything in Hollywood lately, it seems – is the writers’ strike. With the Writers Guild Of America forging a pact with Tinseltown studios only two weeks before Oscar day, organisers were fully expecting to lay on the Awards with stars, writers and directors still on the picket line.

Their gameplan? Less fun. More montages. ‘Plan B’ involved endless clip-reels, musical interludes and stand-in presenters. So instead of Halle Berry, we get Seth Rogen pretending to be Halle Berry (not as funny as it sounds). We get John Travolta ‘waltzing’ (not as funny as it sounds). We get a 10-minute educational video on the Academy voting process (even less interesting than it sounds).

No surprise that US TV station ABC apparently told advertisers not to expect high viewing-figures for yesterday’s ceremony.

The actual show wasn’t so bad. Jon Stewart was pretty funny and the speeches were okay. Out of the performances, in my opinion they all sucked except for Amy Adams singing the Happy Working Song.

In terms of the prizes, I think everyone got what they deserved. All the movies were awesome and at the end of the day, I couldn’t even pick which one should win.

I can’t stand the people who are going around complaining that the commercial movies didn’t win. Juno winning best picture? Johnny Depp best actor? If you haven’t seen the other movies, don’t go around saying that they "got robbed". Just because those people might be more famous doesn’t mean they deserve the Oscar.

I was thinking about red carpet best/worst dresses, first Academy Awards, Oscar facts ect. do you have any ideas?

i might discuss how the nominees are chosen…who gets to vote, etc.

I would also discuss what catagories there are.

I would probably discuss what distinguishes them from other awards (answer: an academy of peers, and they also are the most respected award, or most meaningful in the movie industry).

I might talk about historic winners (oldest, youngest, most nominations, most win, most nominated film)

I might discuss academy controversy…like during the McCarthy era and blacklisted actors, directors, etc.

I might talk about minorities and the academy…first black nominees, etc.

If any of these topics sound interesting, asking about them here on yahoo answers will probably get you tons more specific answers.
