Has a non English language film ever won Best Picture at the Oscars?
September 8th, 2010
I’m surprised to say but NO foreign language movie has ever won best picture.
I’m surprised to say but NO foreign language movie has ever won best picture.
Cimarron, in 1931; Dances with Wolves, 1991; and Unforgiven, in 1993.
And we arrive at the grand finale…the Schmoes prognosticate the winner for Best Picture! Will it be “Avatar”? “The Hurt Locker”? “Drag Me to Hell”??? Enjoy!

I think Hurt Locker is going to win best picture this year.
Mine is District 9. Or Avatar. (I have not watched any other best picture contenders except Up and its not so good).
Well if you haven’t seen them all…you really should not be making a judgement!!!!
OK…
To me, there are a few who should win..and a few who should not…
But there are some great choices:
District 9….. Not a traditional Oscar winner in any sense of the term…But the story is amazing, the concept (of it being set in SA with that countries apartheid legacy…) …brilliant, the way it is shot is also very good.
Hurt Locker… A bit too cliche I think…and brought nothing to the genre…or to fim making in general
Avatar…crap storyline…but could win due to the way it has enhanced films as a whole by utilising so many new techniques…and that is important to the Academy.
An Education… brilliantly shot, brilliantly acted, great script…would be a worthy winner.
Inglorious Besterds?… No…can’t see it winning. at all. The acting was superb…in every role……if there was a better word than superb I would use it…. It was shot expertly…. technically it is a stand out movie…possibly one of the best movies made in the last twenty years..technically.. But the subject matter..the plot? Probably not what will win academy votes. Tarantino is respected..but in a secret ballot of the industry? Not yet…he will win…but not yet.
George Clooney will pick up some sympathy votes for his movie…but most members will vote for him as Actor…not the film (as it should be)…He will pick up that statue.
Do you think that critically acclaimed foreign films like City Of God and Pans Labyrinth should have be nominated for the best picture at the biggest film award show? Or as the Oscars are Hollywood way of patting itself on the back should American films, like Ray and Michael Clayton get the nod over them?
To be fair to the American film industry (I’m not American by the way), the Oscars celebrates just that, the American film industry. If we want a truly global appreciation of films then they would have to be appreciated across language and cultural barriers, and have political and commercial interests and bias taken out of the voting process, far more than even Cannes or other regional fetivals do. Possible? not likely.
