Will a medium sized Oscar fish eat something too big for him to swallow?

April 14th, 2013

Posted by admin in oscars | 1 Comment »

I have an Oscar about 7 inches long I am considering transferring to another tank which contains some goldfish and silver dollars, as well as some Oscars smaller than him. Some of the fish in the other tank are small enough to fit in his mouth but would be hard to swallow. I have another question which I will ask seperately regarding the other fish in that tank but my first question is simply this: Will an Oscar attempt something too big to swallow?

Oscars are greedy by nature. So yeah, an oscar will attempt to eat something too big to swallow.

How can I stop my fish(Oscar) from biting my turtle?

April 5th, 2013

Posted by admin in oscars | 4 Comments »

I have 2 oscars and 2 red eared sliders. The oscars sometimes bite the turtles. Is there a way to stop it. I don’t have the money to separate them into 2 tanks.
They are albino oscars.

Oscars can be a very violent fish. I know you can’t separate them but at least try to sell them or the turtles will be living in hell for the rest of their lives.

Why are the Oscars not just known as the Academy Awards? What is the Oscars bit?

March 12th, 2013

Posted by admin in oscars | 3 Comments »

I always hear Oscars and Academy Awards used interchangeably, but what is the difference between the two?

Oscar is the Name of the Staute the winners receive

How did the Oscar Get Its Name?

Although officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is almost universally known as the Oscar. But where did this name come from? A number of stories have arisen over the years.

The most popular story about the name’s origin involves then Academy librarian and future executive director, Margaret Herrick. The story goes that Herrick, upon seeing the statuette sitting on a table exclaimed "it looks just like my Uncle Oscar!" The name stuck and it has been called by that name ever since.

Another common story involves actress and two-time Academy Award winner Bette Davis, who reportedly named it after her ex-husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson, Jr. Columnist Sidney Skolsky, perhaps the first to use the name in print, claimed that the name came from an old music hall joke, "Will you have a cigar, Oscar?"

Although we don’t know the name’s true origin, we do know that it quickly gained popularity. In 1934 Hollywood reporter Sidney Skolsky used the name in reference to Katherine Hepburn’s win that year. Walt Disney is also reported to have called it by that name in the same year at the Awards ceremony. By 1939 the Academy itself was using the name officially.
