It was a big night for Hollywood last night, as the 83rd Annual Academy Awards were presented. The night’s biggest winners included the British drama “The King’s Speech,” which began the night with 12 Oscar nominations, taking home four statuettes in major categories. “The King’s Speech” won Best Picture, Best Director (for Tom Hooper) and Best Original Screenplay. Colin Firth won his first-ever Academy Award, taking home the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the film.
“The King’s Speech” wasn’t the only movie to win multiple Oscars last night: Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” won four awards, including Cinematography, Visual Effects, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. “The Social Network” won three Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing and Original Score.
Winners in major acting categories included Natalie Portman, who won the Best Actress Oscar for “Black Swan.” Both Supporting Actor awards went to cast members from “The Fighter:” Melissa Leo got the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and her co-star Christian Bale took home the Best Supporting Actor award.
“Toy Story 3″ was the winner of the Best Animated Film Oscar and Randy Newman won Best Original Song for “We Belong Together” from the film.
“Inside Job,” a documentary that chronicles the 2008 global financial crisis, was the winner in the Best Documentary Feature Oscar category. “In a Better World” from Denmark took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.
“The Wolfman” was the winner in the Best Makeup Oscar category, giving veteran Hollywood makeup artist Rick Baker his seventh Oscar and his colleague, Dave Elsey, his first win.
“Alice in Wonderland” won the Best Costume Design Academy Award. Designer Colleen Atwood took home her third Oscar statuette in this category for her work on Tim Burton’s film.
All in all, the show may have seemed long to some, but it actually wasn’t, at least by Oscar standards. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards clocked in at three hours and 12 minutes – much shorter than some previous years, including 2002. That year marked the longest-ever Oscar telecast – it ran for four hours and 23 minutes.
